Chapel Edition

In November last year, we announced that the Chapel Edition of the new Roman Missal would be re-printed.

Printing such a complex and beautiful book takes a little time so, it was only yesterday that we received the stock.

The Missal can serve as a Book of the Chair, as well as being perfect for schools and Mass centres.

Here is a reminder of the features of this edition.

CTS Daily Missal

There has been a delay in publishing our CTS Daily Missal, so we took some of your questions, which have arrived via blog comments, e-mails and telephone enquiries, and put them to our Missal Project Manager,  Pierpaolo Finaldi.

CTS Catholic Compass: The Daily Missal was originally scheduled for release earlier – what happened?

Pierpaolo Finaldi: As with all the Missals, from the Ritual editions to the Sunday Missals and now the Daily editions, all the publishers have been working against the clock, as we received the corrected texts from Rome much later than we had hoped; but I think they were well worth the wait. Even in today’s computerised design environment which allows us to work at speeds which Publishers of the past could only have dreamed of, we only really get one shot at formatting a book of this size and complexity, so we wanted to be sure that it was as good as we could possibly make it. In the end we felt that it was better to delay by a few weeks and give the book the close but time-consuming attention it deserved, so that the readers could enjoy a better publication over the years that they will own this Missal.

CTS Catholic Compass: Can you tell us what is involved in producing a book of this size, and how different is it from the Sunday Missal?

Pierpaolo Finaldi: A book of this size is always a question of finely balancing lots of competing demands. The book must contain everything, but be of a manageable size. The paper weight must be light in order for the book not to be too thick, but it must also be sufficiently opaque to be easily readable. Getting these things right has been a real challenge, and there’s always room for improvement.

The Sunday Missal is a comparatively simple book because the Sunday Liturgy allows the celebrant very little leeway in terms of the content of the Mass, therefore although there is a lot of text to set, the amount of cross-referencing and the options in terms of prefaces, prayers and readings are limited. In a Daily Missal, which contains both Sunday and Weekday Masses, there are many more options. Weekday Mass can be said using the Mass of the day or sometimes using prayers and/or readings from the Saint of the day, or a combination of the two. We wanted to cover the options as exhaustively as possible in a user-friendly way, while at the same time keeping the Missal to a manageable size.

CTS Catholic Compass: Can you go through some of the features of the Daily Missal?

Pierpaolo Finaldi: The CTS Daily Missal will be the only Missal which will contain the Sunday texts as well as the texts for weekday Mass, so it’s an extremely comprehensive volume. Added to that is the fact that all the texts from the Mass will be in both Latin and the new English translation.

We are looking at over 3000 pages of text which is 1000 pages longer than our Bible. It will have six ribbons, which I think users will appreciate, although since the placement of that many ribbons in a book is a manual process it does add a bit of time onto the production process.

The same artwork as was used in the Altar Missal will be present in the Daily Missal, and I hope that will be of real help to people in increasing the devotional value of this Missal.

CTS Catholic Compass: Is this the end of the Roman Missal project?

Pierpaolo Finaldi: Absolutely not; in fact it’s only the beginning. The improvements in the language and translation will certainly be rolled out across the all the different Rites of the Catholic Church, and we will respond to those with good quality, user-friendly resources as soon as we can.

You can pre-order your Daily Missal on the CTS website.

Presenting the new Roman Missal to Bishop Joseph Toal and Cardinal Keith O’Brien

On Monday 7th November, CTS’s Missal project manager, Pierpaolo Finaldi, travelled to Edinburgh to present the new Roman Missal to the bishops of Scotland.

The presentation took place at the Gillis centre, during the November meeting of the Scottish Bishops’ Conference in Edinburgh. Receiving the new Roman Missal on behalf of the bishops were Cardinal Keith O’Brien, Archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh, and Bishop Joseph Toal of Argyll and the Isles, President of the Liturgy Commission.

Mr Finaldi thanked the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland for the trust placed in the Society and the privilege of working on such a wonderful book.

Bishop Toal in turn thanked the CTS for a book that reflected the beauty and noble simplicity of the Roman Rite.

Cardinal O’Brien said he was very proud of the outcome, after the long work of translation which had been an ongoing task throughout the more than 25 years he had been a Bishop. He looked forward to working with CTS on other projects in the future.

Handing the Missal to the Pope

During the Holy Father’s Wednesday weekly audience, he was presented with a special unique white edition of the Altar Missal published by CTS.

It was a joyful occasion – as you can tell from the photos below – as the work of bishops, experts and the CTS all came together at the service of the Pope and the Church as a whole.

Pierpaolo Finaldi, Commissioning Editor of the CTS and project editor on the New Roman Missal said this of the presentation of the New Roman Missal to the Holy Father:

“It has certainly been the highlight of my working life. I felt a deep sense of communion and collaboration with the Holy Father.

The Pope leads the way and sets out his vision for the Church, but it is up to people like us, on the ground, to make that vision a reality in the everyday life of the Faithful. When the Holy Father commented how important beauty was in liturgical books, I felt that all the efforts we had gone to, to make our edition of the Missal as beautiful as possible were fully justified, we had been ‘thinking with the Church’.

For an organization like the CTS and for me personally as a Catholic, it doesn’t get any better than that.”

Bishop Arthur Roche of Leeds, Chairman of ICEL, who you can see in the pictures, also commented that with the 50th anniversary of Vatican II coming up, this is a hugely important time for the Church.

“The publication of the Missal is a significant landmark in the life of the English-speaking world. The CTS have produced a magnificent book for use in Australia, England & Wales and Scotland which the Holy Father described as beautiful. It was clear from my conversation with Pope Benedict that all who have had the privilege of sharing in its production also share with him the hope that this new translation will open up the precious liturgical treasury of the Church to the people of our time.

As we mark the 50th anniversary of the Second Vatican Council in 2012, at which a significant renewal of the liturgy was called for, the new translation will help us deepen our knowledge and our faith in the Eucharist and renew its celebration. I am grateful to the Catholic Truth Society for producing a Missal of such high quality which will soon grace our altars.”

More comments & some photos

Mr Finaldi told how he was presented to the Pope alongside Archbishop Hart of Melbourne and Monsignor Bruce Harbert, executive secretary of ICEL at the time when much of the translation work was done.

“As the Holy Father looked through the Missal he paused at the illustrated page of the Roman Canon and commented that ‘Beauty is most important in Liturgical books‘.

We also met Cardinal Francis Arinze on the way in to the audience and on being told the Missal had been published he commented: ‘The baby has been born!‘”
