Belmarsh Prison

As part of our efforts to encourage participation in the Year of Faith, CTS has been giving away our 2013 Sunday Missal containing all the Masses for the liturgical year in calendar order.

We recently gave a batch to the chaplaincy at Belmarsh prison in London – which contains those considered to be some of the city’s most dangerous offenders – and received the following letter from the chaplain:

Yesterday on my arrival at Chaplaincy office, I found two big boxes containing 60 of The CTS New Sunday Missal for 2013. It was a very generous and lovely surprise, not only for me but also for over 50 Catholic inmates who attend every Sunday the Catholic Mass in our beautiful Chapel here at HMP Belmarsh.

By donating the Missals, you are helping the Catholics who use them not just at Mass in the Chapel but also in their cells, getting familiar with Sunday liturgical readings and prayers and use them for their spiritual development and comfort.
The inmates have asked me to convey their gratitude and thanks and will remember you and the CTS staff in their humble prayers.

Please keep in touch.
God bless
Fr Edward Okon O.Carm
The RC Chaplain at HMP Belmarsh

It is thanks to all the help we receive, spiritual and financial, from our Members, supporters and customers that we are able to aid the evangelisation in this and many other ways.

Tuesday 12th February

Like everyone else, I was totally unprepared for Pope Benedict’s announcement of his resignation. And yet, bearing in mind what he has said about his declining health, I can see the courage and the wisdom in his decision.

During his visit to this country in 2010, I was amazed to see how well he kept up with the demands of his very full schedule, in some cases leaving his younger assistants well behind! Once or twice, during visits to Rome, I got some idea of how demanding even his regular programme is.

I know that in taking this decision he will have been motivated, not by the desire to escape from the burden of office, but by concern that his physical frailty may prevent him from carrying out the task entrusted to him, in the way that he would wish.

I can only guess at the amount of prayer and careful consideration that lies behind this decision. Even more than usual, he will be in the prayers of us all at this time.

Bishop Paul Hendricks, CTS Chairman

11 February 2013

As so many others, I was amazed to learn today of the Holy Father’s intention to resign his ministry as Bishop of Rome.

My surprise soon turned to admiration as I considered Pope Benedict’s courage and integrity to take such a step – never one to be hampered by convention in his mission to spread the truth.

As Publishers to the Holy See, it has been our privilege to publish his writings and disseminate his wonderful teaching and the wide CTS family expresses our heartfelt good wishes and gratitude to a true shepherd.

May we share something of his love for the Church of Christ.

We continue to remember him with increased affection in our daily Angelus here at our offices.

At the start of this month, the Evangelium Conference 2012 took place at the Oratory school in Reading. CTS is a proud sponsor of this event and wanted to thank everyone who attended, helped organise it, or made any kind of contribution, large or small, to the undoubted success of the weekend. There follows a press release focusing on the call to action from the Papal Nuncio who celebrated Mass there on Sunday August 6th.

Archbishop Antonio Mennini, Apostolic Nuncio to Great Britain, attended this year’s Evangelium conference with over 150 young adults. He celebrated the principal Sunday mass.

In his homily Archbishop Mennini spoke about the year of Faith, called for by Pope Benedict XVI. He referred to the conference as a blessed time of reflection on the Faith and task of evangelisation. He urged the young Catholics present to consider the calling to priesthood and religious life and stressed the importance of good and generous marriages and families to show forth God’s love in a concrete way. He re-echoed the Holy Father’s call to make the Faith public by saying,

“Nowadays, when we face an aggressively secular and relativist society, our relationship with the Lord is vitally important and should shape and enlighten our words and actions, not only in the chapel but in the marketplace too”.

Evangelium is a conference to enable committed young Catholic adults to become effective evangelists and leaders in the modern world. The event was attended by a wide range of expert speakers including former Anglican bishop Mgr Andrew Burnham of the Ordinariate and the director of the Thomas More Legal Institute for the Defense of Religious Freedom, Neil Addison.

Neil Addison gives his view on the conference in the 17th August’s edition of the Catholic Herald.

As of today, 1st August, Australians can get all their CTS books, Bibles, booklets, leaflets and other resources directly from us, as well as your other suppliers.

Meanwhile, from the other side of the English-speaking world, came the following encouraging words from the American ‘Catholicism Pure and Simple’ blog.

The piece, on Catholic members of team USA currently taking part in the 30th Olympiad here in London, concluded by mentioning our recently published story about the CTS General Secretary who was an Olympic champion and adds:

“The Catholic Truth Society is a remarkable British organization that publishes tracts that are professional, deep and accessible. I personally credit them with giving me an excellent background in the faith I was rediscovering while studying abroad. My wife buys their publications for her confirmation students.”
