Companion to Faith

Deacon Nick Donnelly’s booklet Companion to Faith, written for the Year of Faith, has been glowingly reviewed.

Andrew Plasom-Scott praises the text as a “Fantastic idea”, blogging:

“Each chapter contains some [ideas or examples] that you might expect (Fr Finigan’s blog, for example) and some that might be new to you (such as Stuart James’ somewhat eclectic eChurch blog).”

It is meant to be a practical guide for the Year of Faith, which begins in exactly a month, on 14th October. You can read the contents page of the book, as well as an extract, on the CTS website.

The review ends with these encouraging words:

“If you are looking for inspiration to do something different for the Year of Faith, this could well be the book for you. And if you are not, perhaps you should be!”

Companion to Faith by Deacon Nick Donnelly, is available from CTS priced £2.50

Year of Faith Prayer Book

The Year of Faith, which begins next month, was called to coincide with the fiftieth anniversary of the Second Vatican Council, opened on October 14th 1962.

The Year is bound to reinvigorate the long-running debates surrounding the Council, its intentions and its implementation. There was recently an excellent blog post from Francis Phillips at the Catholic Herald, looking at the Church before the Council and asking whether there were not already visible signs of trouble.

This intellectual debate is vital, yet there is a danger of Catholics being labelled for or against the Council, and this division may prove a distraction from the Holy Father’s core principles behind this special Year: profess the Faith, celebrate it and witness to it.

Francis Phillips closes her post with the following honourable mention of the CTS, remembering that prayer is the best way to begin the Church’s vital engagement with the modern world:

“The CTS, certainly one of the hopeful signs of a renewed Catholic apostolate today, compared with its faded booklets in the porches of parish churches in the past, has produced a ‘Year of Faith Prayer Book’. It includes prayers to the Trinity, Our Lady, the saints and for the Church and the world. Our country, which has lost its moral compass, needs many prayers as we know. Action has to begin in prayer. Using the ‘Year of Faith Prayer Book’ would be a start.”

Cover of Reasons to Believe

Among our new titles is Reasons to Believe, a booklet that sets out 12 arguments for the existence of God. As its author explains in the following article, it is a text born of real experiences, dialogue and questions.

My experience of work, life and Faith in the City was rather different from the common, negative media picture.

I saw much hard work, kindness, fun and strong underlying honesty. I saw many giving very generously to charity. Above all, I saw a real openness to the spiritual.

There was, however, a widespread lack of knowledge of basic Christian theology. There was a widespread lack of regular church attendance. As against that, virtually every law firm had an active Christian group; many had very well attended Christmas services; overall, one very often came across an interest in the spiritual, an expressed belief that there was “something there”.

Since retirement from my City practice, I have worked as a consultant and held non executive appointments. I have had much more time to read and think. I became convinced that a short book, summarizing the reasons to believe in God, would be helpful to many people. I decided to write it.

My book is addressed to two categories of reader. First, believers who (like me) would find it difficult to explain off the top of their head “Why Believe”. Second, all those who consider “ there may be something there” but are not aware of the intellectually compelling arguments for belief – or even that any such arguments exist.

An Image of the author

I thought that such a book, addressed to laymen, might be particularly effective if written by a layman. I appreciated very well my own limitations, of intellect and knowledge. I was not an academic or a theologian. But I could read research and think. I was used to summarizing complex issues, and to writing clearly. Above all, I knew my audience. I came from a background where I met, and worked with, my potential readers every day. The book is intentionally short, succinct and addressed to those wishing to make up their own minds on the basis of clear reasoning.

I do not believe in historical circles. I do not believe we can go back to where we were – or should try to. But people do not change. Their fundamental needs and desires remain. Their hunger for the spiritual is constant. Eternal truths remain. Presentation will change. That is not because previous methods were wrong or second rate; it is because the world changes. We do not use a quill pen in the age of the computer; but the power and beauty of Shakespeare’s work moves us as much as ever.

The booklet does not purport to set out proofs. It sets out arguments, reasons to believe in God. They are clear and powerful. They can be taken seriously, and they compel serious consideration, by any modern reader.

CTS is proud to announce a whole host of new material is now available to order online through our website.

The brand new titles cover a wide range of subjects, from an imitation leather bound New Testament and Psalms and new Yearly Missal, to CTS Explanations on divorce and ecology.

We have also produced material especially for the Year of Faith which begins in October. There is a Year of Faith Prayer Book, aimed at helping readers to reflect on and ask God about their Faith. Alongside it comes a Companion to Faith divided into 12 sections, full of suggestions for deepening one’s knowledge of Catholicism and a Year of Faith Leaflet, ideal for explaining the upcoming special time in a simple way.

There are of course others, and over the coming weeks, CTS Catholic Compass will be drawing attention to each, with contributions from authors; for now, however, you can view more information on our website.

There are still places available at this year’s Evangelium Conference at the Oratory school in Reading.

As in previous years, the Conference is one of the stand-out events of the summer’s Catholic calendar in the UK, bringing together speakers and special guests of international fame.

The invitation is to young adults (aged 18-35), and it’s all happening from 3rd – 5th August. A mix of conferences, workshops, Q&A, prayer, worship and fun, this is a great opportunity to grow your faith and meet others who wish to do the same.
