On Sunday, 15th September, 2013, a unique ceremony will take place at the Roman Catholic Garrison Cathedral of St Michael and St George, Queen’s Ave, Aldershot. After the 11 am Mass, celebrated by Bishop Richard Moth, Ordinary of the Catholic Chaplaincy to our armed services, 30,000 copies of a new Prayer Book for The Armed Forces will be handed over by the Knights of St Columba.
Ron Lynch, Supreme Knight of the Order, will present the specially commissioned prayer book to a serving member of the Armed Forces during Mass at the Cathedral. Bishop Moth will receive and bless a token copy at the Offertory procession.
This new publication was created from the original CTS Simple Prayer Book. The representatives of the Chaplaincy for the various armed services, Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and the Army, all made contributions and agreed the deletions. The Imprimatur is by Bishop Moth.
Bearing in mind the rugged conditions of life in the armed services, particularly in combat conditions, the prayer book has a water resistant cover and is of a size to fit into a standard shirt pocket.
This project has taken two years to reach fruition and the entire cost of producing the new prayer book, some £18,000, was borne by the Knights of St Columba.
According to the Bishopric of the Armed Services there are around 21,000 Roman Catholics serving in the British Forces.
The Order has plans to widen the circulation of the prayer book and make it available to families of Catholics serving in our armed forces.
Please keep them in your prayers.
