There is an increase in the number of retreats and pilgrimages available to young people. Many return with a profound experience of the Church fully alive and an awareness of God’s presence in their lives.

But what happens after that?

Staying faithful in a secular world is a huge challenge and many are seeking somewhere to come together as young Catholics, to be supported, affirmed, encouraged and taught more about their faith. They know they cannot do it alone and 1061 aims to help meet this need.

The Catholic National Shrine of Our Lady in Walsingham in partnership with Youth 2000 is delighted to announce their new Formation Programme for Young Adults. Our trial series is currently running and our big launch will be in the summer, ready to begin in Sept 2017.

All the young people who have attended 1061 so far have loved stepping back from their everyday environment and making space for development of their spiritual life with others their age.

Why 1061?

1061 is the year that Richeldis de Faverches prayed that she might undertake some special work in honour of Our Lady. In answer to that prayer, the Virgin Mary led her in spirit to Nazareth, showed her the house where the Annunciation occurred, and asked her to build a replica in Walsingham to serve as a perpetual memorial of the Annunciation.

We are incredibly blessed to be hosting the retreats at Dowry House in Walsingham served by The Community Of Our Lady of Walsingham. The newly refurbished Retreat House is not only peaceful and comfortable, but is located directly opposite the Abbey ruins and the site where the replica of Holy House of Nazareth was built. The house holds 27 people, which ensures the retreats are intimate and allows space for private, peaceful prayer and authentic fellowship.

What does the Programme involve?

The Programme is a series of 3 weekend retreats (Fri night – Sun lunch) over the course of the academic year, 1 per term.

  • Part I Abide in me – Authentic Prayer – Mgr John Armitage
  • Part II Built on Rock – Scripture & Tradition – Fr Nicholas Crowe OP
  • Part III According to your will – Radical Generosity – Fr Stephen Wang

Through the experienced guest speakers, participants will be opened to the wealth of Church Teachings & Tradition. Mass, Exposition, prayer & praise, shared meals and social time will be part of each day. Members of the Youth 2000 Leadership Team from around the country will journey with those who attend, supporting them in their formation and encourage them to become involved in ministry within their local church.

Some feedback so far…
The talks were fantastic, of the highest standard! – Fr Lee Marshall, Diocese of Hallam
I felt rejuvenated from time spent in prayer, the wonderful talks and fellowship. – Anon
1061 was an incredible weekend that ignited a fire for spiritual growth. – Imogen, 26, London

Our Hopes…

Ultimately we hope to help young adults who want to go deeper in their faith to become intentional disciples.

For those who are not yet ministering in a church context we hope that through the series of retreats, and ongoing formation between retreats, they will feel encouraged and able to offer themselves to their local church.

We hope that those who are in ministry will return to their local church refreshed, nourished & encouraged to continue to give of themselves to the church, having been feed spiritually & intellectually. We hope they will be more aware of the need to ensure their own formation and spiritual life is continually nurtured.
